AYS - Importing a boat into Canada

The recent currency fluctuations have created a wonderful opportunity for Canadians to purchase their pleasure craft in America and import them back to Canada.

Buying and importing your next boat into Canada is easier than you may imagine. Due to NAFTA you will not have to pay any tariff or duties for a boat built in North America. If you take the boat promptly out of America you will not have to pay any American taxes. GST and PST will have to be paid when you enter Canada.

For re-entry documents we recommend you use a titling agency such as Pacific Maritime Title They are very familiar with the process.

Canadian Customs - Contact them before you begin your trip into Canada. They will inform you where you must first land in Canada to clear customs. This is important. If you call up before you leave and ask for assistance they are very helpful.

Registering your boat - Service Canada - Give these folks a call as well before your make your trip north. After you clear customs you'll need to title your vessel in Canada.

Don't forget your passport! Border crossings now require stronger forms of identification than in the past.
